PEORIA -- Richard William Ford of Peoria died Friday, July 19, 2013 at Bel-Wood Nursing Home.
Born March 25, 1928 in Rosefield Township, Ill. to Clarence and Estella (Patton) Ford, he spent his entire life in Peoria County.
He served his country as a member of the Illinois Air National Guard. He worked at Caterpillar but decided to become a barber and attended Peoria Barber College. It was at his first barbering job that he met his future wife, Mabel (June or Judy) Brust. They married on Dec. 13, 1955 in Peoria. He opened Dick's Barber Shop in Bartonville in 1962 and remained there for over thirty years. After retirement from barbering, he enjoyed working at St. Augustine Manor and PHD Services.
Surviving is one daughter, Cindy (John Throop) Ford of Adams, NY.
His wife, son (Scott Ford), his parents, and one brother and one sister preceded him in death.
He was a man who loved his wife and children, nature, dogs, pie a la mode, mashed potatoes, and possessed an unquestioning faith in God that he passed on to his children.
A celebration of Richard's life will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, July 24 at Cumerford-Hurd Funeral Home in Peoria, with visitation one hour before the service. His son-in-law, the Rev. Dr. John Throop, will officiate. Family friend Lynn Thompson will provide music. Burial will be in Swan Lake Memorial Gardens in Peoria.
Cindy and John are grateful to the staff and management at Bel-Wood Nursing Home for Richard's excellent, dignified, and loving care for so many years. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bel-Wood Nursing Home, 6701 W. Plank Road, Peoria, IL 61607, and directed to the Staff Appreciation Fund.
