Joy Ellen (Taylor) Wegel, age 89, of Pekin, passed away on October 5, 2015 at Pekin Manor.
Joy was born on November 12, 1925 in Brooklyn, IN to Russell Murphy and Eunice Mae (Cook) Taylor. She married Charles A. Wegel on May 29, 1948 in Evansville, IN. He preceded her in death on October 27, 1997.
She was also preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Seth Taylor, and her sister, Marilyn Lane.
Joy is survived by her children: Sarah (James) Pottinger of Melbourne, FL, Martha (William) Bond of Pekin, Susan (Roland) Koeppel of Peoria, and Carl (Joyce) Wegel of Champaign; one brother, Donald (Virginia) Taylor of Evansville, IN; 13 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Joy worked as a waitress for Steak n' Shake for 25 years. She attended The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with her husband and was a long-time member of the First United Methodist Church. Joy volunteered at school when her children were young, spent time as a Girl Scout leader, and was "the Candy Lady". She was a fabulous cook, a fierce domino player, and a wonderful mother who taught her children very much. She enjoyed sewing and needlework and spending time with her family. Above all, Joy had a genuine and caring heart, and was a friend to anyone she met.
Services will be held at Cumerford-Hurd Funeral Home and will remain private for family. Burial will be in Swan Lake Memory Gardens.
