Joan Schmidt

Joan A. Schmidt, 85, of Peoria Heights passed away on Sunday, April 19, 2015 at Proctor Hospital in Peoria.

Joan was born to Joseph A. and Geraldine M. (Hansmeyer) Haaga on February 12, 1930 in Peoria. She married Robert E. Schmidt on November 21, 1953 in Peoria. He preceded her in death on October 7, 1994.

Surviving Joan is her son, William Schmidt of East Peoria; sister, Mary Dynan of Peoria Heights; two nieces, Molly (Eric) Vallelian of Argyle, TX, and Elizabeth (Jeff) Webster of Grayslake; three great-nieces, Laura, Sarah, and Caroline Vallelian, all of Argyle, TX; and sister-in-law, Gerry Krumwiede of Park Ridge.

She was preceded in death by her parents and aunt, Clela Hansmeyer.

Joan was a graduate of Woodruff High School and Bradley University, earning both a Bachelor's and Master's Degree in English. She was a school teacher for District 150 and Father Sweeney Middle School where she taught literature and grammar to gifted students.

She was a member of the Ivy Club and St. Paul Episcopal Church in Peoria. Joan enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, singing opera, talking about English, and walking her dog. You could not ask her a question about grammar or literature she didn't know the answer to.

A Celebration of Joan's Life will be at Gillette Hall at St. Paul's Church on North Avenue on Saturday, May 2 between 3 and 5 pm.

Memorial donations in honor of Joan may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or ASPCA.
