James “Jim” T. Brereton, 84, of East Peoria, formerly of Peoria, passed away at 2:10 p.m. on Thursday, June 28, 2012, at his residence.
A celebration of Jim’s life will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, July 2, 2012, at Dayton Avenue Baptist Church in Peoria, with Pastor H.B. Mooney officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Cremation rites have been accorded.
Jim was born in Pittsburgh, PA on January 17, 1928, the son of John and Amanda “Emma” (Dunlop) Brereton. He married Eileen Walsh. He later married Willa D. McLean on June 15, 1968 in Peoria. She survives.
He is also survived by one son, Stephen (Edith) Brereton of Peoria; two daughters, Peggy Brereton of Dania Beach, FL and Connie (David) Stokoe of Morton; one sister, Emma Cannon of Peoria; five step-daughters, Jo Lynn (Chris) Weber, Karen Brown, Marian Gerbner, Mary (Maurice) Hammer and Elizabeth (Gary) Robertson; twenty-four grandchildren; and thirty-one great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Robert and Richard (Angie); and one sister, Marian Carbaugh.
Jim worked as an electronic technician for the United States Postal Service. He retired in 1989, after forty-three years of service. He was president of the local American Postal Workers Union. He owned Jim’s Appliance Service for several years. He was a member of the Navy Marine Club Ship 34 in Peoria Heights, the National Horseshoe Pitchers Association and the Post Office Men’s League Bowlers.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made in Jim’s memory to the charity of the donor’s choice.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Clary Funeral Home, 3004 West Lake Avenue, in Peoria.
