Estelle Elizabeth Selkirk, 98, a long time resident of Peoria, IL, died at 7:43 pm on Friday October 3, 2014, surrounded by family at her residence at Park Village Pines, Kalamazoo, MI.
Born in Crawfordsville, IN on July 10, 1916 to Ernest Sering and Mamie (Shepherd) Sering, Estelle moved with her family as a young girl to Peoria. On May 18, 1933, she married Gordon A. Selkirk in Petersburg, IL. Together they owned Selkirk's Service Station in Peoria from 1946 to 1987, where Gordon repaired cars and Estelle kept up with the bookkeeping. They raised two sons, Gordon D. Selkirk, and Lawrence J. (Larry) Selkirk. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Peoria and the Women's Auxilliary for the Peoria Motorcycle Club. In her later years, Estelle moved to Kalamazoo, MI where she was very much loved by neighbors, caregivers and family. Her quiet, pleasant spirit will be greatly missed.
She was preceded in death by her husband, both sons, four brothers, one sister and one grandson. Surviving are two sisters, Mrs.Wanda Driscoll, of Peoria, Mrs. Nadine (Jess) Isonhart of East Peoria, and one brother, Jerry (Wilma) Sering of Peoria; daughter-in-law Mrs. Yvonne (Gordon) Selkirk of Kalamazoo; two grandchildren, Christine (Bruce) Schoenberger of Oshkosh, WI, and Reed (Pam) Selkirk of Kalamazoo; and eight great grandchildren, Wade Selkirk of Holland, MI, Ian Selkirk-Hable of Milwaukee, Elliot Selkirk, Cameron Selkirk, Madison Selkirk, Lainey Selkirk, Gabriel Selkirk, and Olivia Selkirk, all of Kalamazoo.
A memorial service and luncheon will be held in the Spring, in association with Cumerford-Hurd Funeral Home, Peoria, IL.
