Dennis Gainey

Dennis L. Gainey, 80, of Dunlap, passed away at 6:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 7, 2016, at his residence.
He was a parishioner at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, where Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, January 15, 2016, with Fr. Thomas E. Taylor as celebrant. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 11 a.m. on Friday, prior to the Mass at St. Thomas. Interment will be at Resurrection Cemetery.
Dennis was born on June 9, 1935 in Schuyler, NE, a son of Dorsey W. and Mary E. (Koziol) Gainey. They preceded him in death, along with a brother, Bill Gainey. He married Mary Frances Hunt on October 27, 1956 in Omaha, NE. She survives.
He is also survived by his daughters, Linda K. Waible of Peoria, Sharon M. (Jeff) Weidenaar of Norwood, MA and Sheila C. Sullivan of Springfield; son, Brian J. Gainey of Dunlap; sisters, Jean Keith of Bella Vista, AR and Pat (Don) Neuman of Seward, NE; and five grandchildren.
Dennis was a U.S. Army veteran, serving from 1954 to 1956, at Misawa Air Base in Japan. He attended Creighton University, the University of Nebraska and Bradley University. He earned his doctorate from Indiana University.
He was a former teacher and school administrator in Peoria and retired as Associate Superintendant in 1990. He served on the Board of Directors for many community, civic and church organizations, as well as serving as a Boy Scout leader for twenty-two years.
Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Thomas Church Building Fund or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Clary Funeral Home, 3004 West Lake Avenue, in Peoria.
