Sonny was born on December 18, 1937 in Peoria, a son of Howard and Mary (Frahm) Herring. They preceded him in death, along with three brothers, Rick and Bob Herring and Bill Fuller, and two sisters, Linda Welcome and Margie Ahten. He married Shirley Irene McMorris on January 19, 1959 in Peoria. She survives.
He is also survived by his sons, Chuck Herring of East Peoria and Joe (Julie) Herring of Canton; brother, Jerry (Josephine) Herring of Williamsfield; sisters, Patsy Terrell of Pekin and Marilyn Herring of Peoria; grandchildren, Kyle and Paige Herring of Spring Hill, FL and Anna Herring of Canton; and many nieces, nephews and extended family.
Sonny retired as a driver for G & D Integrated in Morton and was formerly employed as a power truck operator for Caterpillar in East Peoria.
He was a member of El Vista Baptist Church in Peoria and a past member of the Federation of Musicians Local 26 in Peoria, Freedom Valley A.B.A.T.E. and H.O.G.
Sonny loved flying and was working toward his pilot’s license, prior to his motorcycle accident, and building and painting old cars. He was the master at auto body and paint.
He was a drummer for several area bands and enjoyed fishing, riding motorcycles, tinkering around the house, collecting Chicago Cubs and Bears memorabilia, going to the lake and sitting on the porch with family and friends.
Sonny had a big, dry sense of humor, was a little bashful, very giving and a super dad. He loved his children, grandchildren and his wife, the love of his life for fifty-five years, Shirley.
Memorial contributions may be made in Sonny’s memory to the Alzheimer’s Association – Central Illinois Chapter.
