Ann Carolyn Zimmerman Mathis, died on Saturday, February 28, 2015 at the John C. Proctor Endowment in Peoria, Illinois. She was born in Peoria on March 27, 1938 to Samuel and Martha Pfister Zimmerman.
Ann was preceded in death by J. Michael Mathis, her husband of 53 years. She is survived by her three sons, Michael (Peggy Pohlman) and Stephen (Diane) both of Springfield, Illinois and Christopher (Colleen) of Tucson, Arizona and Cambridge, Massachusetts; a stepbrother, John Brown of Arlington Heights, Illinois; a stepsister, Mary Ackerman of Stevensville, Michigan; and three grandchildren, Patrick, Jeffrey and Benjamin. Her parents and stepfather, Warren Brown, and a stepsister, Anne Roffel, also predeceased her.
Ann attended Peoria High School and the University of Illinois. She worked as a fashion model in the 1960's and for many years as office manager at The Mathis Law Firm. She was an active member of numerous civic and philanthropic organizations, including the Peoria County Bar Association Lawyers Auxiliary, Easter Seals Foundation Board of Directors, the Goodman Theatre, the Massachusetts Historical Society and the Peoria Art Guild, where she served as Treasurer. She was also a member of the Country Club of Peoria and the Union League Club of Chicago.
A passionate and lifelong student of travel, politics, theater, history, sports, art and design, she instilled this appreciation in her children and grandchildren. They, and all who knew her, benefitted greatly from her infectious wit, grace, sense of style and strong belief in the importance of both education and public service.
A reception in honor of Ann's life will be held from 2-4 p.m. on Saturday, March 7, at the Country Club of Peoria. Private services will be held in Sarasota, Florida at a later time. Donations may be made to the John C. Proctor Endowment and to the Southwind Park-Springfield Parks Foundation Ann C. Mathis Memorial.
